Marco Da Rin's research project "The Corporate Governance of Venture-backed Firms" is the seventh featured Research of the Month in the Research section on this website.   Commission sets up new expert advisory group
The European Commission has set up an expert advisory group to provide detailed technical advice on preparing corporate governance and company law measures. Among the 20 non-governmental experts are ECGI Fellow Theodore Baums, Francesco Chiappetta of ECGI Institutional member Telecom Italia, Mario Stella-Richter of ECGI Institutional member Assogestioni, and four ECGI Ordinary members, Erich Kandler, Stilpon Nestor, Leonardo Peklar and Patrick Zurstrassen. The technical work of this group will be complementary to the more strategic role carried out by the recently created European Corporate Governance Forum. See :

  Three new ECGI Board members
Three new Board members were elected at ECGI's General Assembly to replace three Directors who have resigned owing to their other commitments. André Lévy-Lang takes the place of François Henrot as a non-academic member of the ECGI Board. Professor Erik Berglöf and Professor Klaus Hopt replace Professor Bengt Holmström and Professor Richard Portes as academic members of the Board. See:

  Working Paper prizes awarded
The winners of the 2005 Working Paper prizes were announced at ECGI's General Assembly held at SDA Bocconi on 9 March 2005.

  Five new Fellows nominated
On 9 March at its General Assembly, the ECGI announced the appointment of five new Fellows of the Institute drawn from academia in Europe and North America. They augment the 21 inaugural Fellows who were nominated in 2002 and an additional 6 nominated in 2003. See:

  ECGI's 2005 General Assembly and Panel Discussion
The ECGI held its third General Assembly in Milan at SDA Bocconi School of Management on Wednesday, 9 March. This was followed by a panel discussion on the European Commission's Corporate Governance Action Plan, followed by a reception and dinner, kindly sponsored by SDA Bocconi, where the guest speaker was Mario Monti, former EU Commissioner.   Conference call for papers: The Ownership of the Modern Corporation
The Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics (ACLE) at the University of Amsterdam and The Journal of Financial Intermediation will host a conference on the legal and economic determinants of publicly-listed versus private ownership on September 16th-17th in Amsterdam. The event will be co-organized with the Finance Group at the University of Amsterdam and the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI). See

  2004 Clinical Paper Competition winners
ECGI's Clinical Paper competition organised in collaboration with the Journal of Financial Economics (JFE), the Swedish Center for Business and Policy Studies (SNS) with financial support from the Jan Wallander and Tom Hedelius Research Foundation. The winners of the 2004 ECGI Clinical paper Competition were announced at a ceremony on 9 December 2004 organised by the ECGI, the Journal of Financial Economics (JFE) and the Center for Business and Policy Studies (SNS) with financial support from the Jan Wallander and Tom Hedelius Foundation.   Draft guidelines for governance of state-owned enterprises
The OECD has issued draft guidelines for governance of state-owned enterprises. Public comment is invited before 28 January 2005. The draft is available through the revised Codes section on this website. Over 150 codes and principles from over 55 countries can now be accessed individually. Alternatively, there is a new search facility to view codes by country, by language or by year of publication. See:

  Commission creates European Forum
The European Commission has set up a European Corporate Governance Forum to examine best practices in Member States with a view to enhancing the convergence of national corporate governance codes and providing advice to the Commission. The Forum, comprising fifteen senior experts whose experience and knowledge of corporate governance are widely recognized at European level, includes ECGI Chairman Antonio Borges, ECGI Founder and Fellow Eddy Wymeersch and ECGI Member Jaap Winter.   ECGI aims to stimulate debate on new EU recommendations
On 6 October, the EU Commission issued two important recommendations concerning corporate governance. The first concerns the presence and role of independent non-executive directors; the second the level of remuneration of directors. The ECGI has devoted a section on this website to each of these topics. With links to proprietary ECGI research and other references to material, these pages aim to generate research, stimulate debate and disseminate best practice. See:

Corporate Governance Training Network project starts
European Corporate Governance Training Network (ECGTN) A four year project under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme's Human Resources and Mobility (HRM) activity (The Marie Curie Actions) starts officially on 1 October 2004. Coordinated by the CEPR and the ECGI, the European Corporate Governance Training Network (ECGTN) aims to reduce the European research and training gap in corporate governance by bringing together Europe's leading academics and institutions from law, economics, finance, political economy and management to train doctoral students in conducting world class research in this area.   22 new Research Associates nominated
The ECGI Board has approved the recommendation of the Research Associates Committee, chaired by Professor Colin Mayer, to appoint 22 new ECGI Research Associates. This brings the number of Research Associates to 53 and the number of Research Members (including ECGI Fellows) to 80.

ECGI Transatlantic Corporate Governance Dialogue
This major new initiative by the ECGI with the American Law Institute (ALI) was launched with a full-day public conference in Brussels on 12 July 2004. An ECGI Working Paper will be produced as a result of the Conference and this will be published on this site in due course. See:
