Governance of the Institute

The Institute has been established as an international scientific non-profit association under Belgian law in accordance with its Articles of Association. See details of the Founder Members who were signatories to these Articles. The Articles were revised in order to accommodate changes in Belgian law and the introduction of a new category of member - the Research member. See the revised Articles which were approved by the membership at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 10 March 2004.

It is headed by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom are drawn from academia in order to ensure the Institute's academic independence. Other directors have strong ties with the private sector and governments. All are impartially committed to furthering the Institute's goals and mission.

In accordance with its Statutes, the Chairman of the Board, who does not have to be a member of the Institute, must be a non-academic. The Vice-Chairman must be an academic. Day-to-day management of the Institute is undertaken by an Executive Director, responsible to the Board. This post carries a term of 3 years. The current holders of these offices are:

Chairman
Antonio Borges, Vice Chairman, Goldman Sachs International

Vice Chairman
Guido Ferrarini, Professor of Law, University of Genoa

Executive Director
Marco Becht, Professor of Finance and Economics, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)

The ultimate authority is the General Assembly, which comprises all the Members of the Institute, each of whom has one vote. The powers of the General Assembly are detailed in the Statutes. (Click here for English version) It meets at least once a year, providing a forum not only for the ongoing governance of the Institute, but also an opportunity for members to meet, interact and debate matters of importance and topicality.

A number of committees have been appointed to undertake specific functions of the Institute. These committees operate in a transparent fashion. Details of their deliberations and decisions will be posted on this website.
