Data protection and privacy policy

The ECGI is committed to protecting the rights and privacy of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data.

ECGI use of personal data

It is necessary for the ECGI to process personal data in the normal and proper conduct of the management and administration of the Institution. Specifically, personal data is stored and used interactively to create publicly-available website pages on the ECGI website such as:

- the ECGI membership Directory;
- research projects and research interests;
- working papers and books.

In addition, personal data is obtained from those who register to attend ECGI meetings and conferences. The ECGI holds no financial information on its members. Membership subscriptions are processed through the secure online payment processing facilities provided under contract by Ogone.

Any personal data which we collect, record or use in any way whether it is held on paper, on computer or other media will have appropriate safeguards applied to it to ensure that we comply with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Data Protection Principles

We fully endorse and adhere to the eight principles of Data Protection as set out in the Data Protection Act 1998. These principles state that personal data must be:

1. fairly and lawfully processed;
2. processed for specified purposes;
3. adequate, relevant and not excessive;
4. accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date;
5. kept for no longer than necessary;
6. processed in line with the rights of the individual;
7. kept secure;
8. not transferred to countries outside the European Economic Area unless there is adequate protection for the information.

Registration with the Information Commissioner

The ECGI is registered as a Data Controller under the Act and will adhere to these principles and the guidelines set out by the Information Commissioner.

Our purpose for holding personal data and a general description of the categories of people and organisations to whom we may disclose it are listed in the Data Protection register (Registration Number Z9059678). You may inspect this or obtain a copy from the Information Commissioner's Office.

Accuracy of personal data

If you have a query regarding the accuracy of your personal data then your query will be dealt with fairly and impartially. Under the Data Protection Act, any individual may email the Data Protection Co-ordinator and request a copy of the information which we hold about them. If the details are inaccurate, you can ask us to amend them.
